The books
Easy Christmas Songs for the Harmonica came out in November 2017 with 25 carols. Easy Gospel Songs for the Harmonica followed in August 2020 with more than 80 hymns and gospel tunes. There is also a collection of 15 patriotic songs, and in December 2025 I published a second Christmas volume with 19 carols that aren't in the first book.
All four are written for the same instrument: a 10-hole diatonic harmonica in the key of C, the model most music stores sell to beginners.
Why some songs are easier than others
A C harmonica has every note of the major scale in holes 4 to 7. Above and below that, some notes are missing unless you bend them. Songs that fit in the middle of the harmonica, like Joy to the World or My Country, 'Tis of Thee, are the easiest place to start. Tunes with a wider range move up into holes 8 to 10, and a few, like the national anthem, can't be played on a C harmonica without bending. When a song needs a bend, the page says so and marks the bent notes.
Every free song on this site is in the public domain, so the words can be printed next to the tab.
Reading the tabs
A number tells you which hole to play. A plain number means blow, and a number with a minus sign means draw (breathe in). So 4 is a blow on hole 4 and -4 is a draw on the same hole. That's all you need for most of the free arrangements. You can start with one here.
